This was Anne's idea, and I always thought of it as Anne's song to sing. But she died. And when I was asked to provide a recording of this song for a compilation honoring Anne's work, I had to re-learn it, after more than 10 years of Anne's passing. The more I sing it, the more I identify with Anne's point of view. Some people do call me trouble, but I'm much more than that.
Sum Me Up (c)2016 Steve Key/Anne Sucher (Key of E)
(note: I play it capo 2 in D, capo over 5 strings, leaving 6th string open for "fake drop D")
Intro: A-E, A-E, A-G#m-C#m, B-E
v1 I'm kinda complicated (A-E)
been down a lot of roads (A-E)
I could tell you stories if you'd ever want to know (A-E-B)
You know me in passing (A-E)
But I can't seem to get through (G#7-C#m)
Don’t put a label on me (A-E)
Decide I’m nothing new (A-E)
Don’t you sum me up (A-G#m-C#m)
In just a word or two (B-E)
v2 Some people call me trouble -- old lovers called me cruel
Good friends know I'm faithful, though I've been made a fool
Maybe you've heard that about me, but I tell you it's not true
Don’t put a label on me, decide I’m nothing new
Don’t you sum me up in just a word or two
Br You could write me off (G#7-C#m)
You could say goodbye (G#7-C#m)
Judge me by my cover and never know the heart inside (A-E-B)
But I wish you'd stay (G#7-C#m)
Spend a little time (G#7-C#m)
Maybe one plus one (A-E)
is a sum that we could try (F#7-B)
v3 You say that I've misread you, that you're just a little shy
And I need to be patient, finally listen to your side
You sure turned the tables, and I see that you're right
So why don’t we start over, see each other new
If you don’t sum me up the way I summed up you
Don’t you sum me up
Don’t you sum me up
Don’t you sum me up
In just a word or two
